Today we visited the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg. It was a very rainy morning that was perfect for an intellectual outing. This museum just opened on 1-11-11 was designed by HOK a firm with affiliations in Kansas City and is worth the trip even if you never go inside. The architecture is astounding, incorporating unique glass triangles, stone and concrete in a harmonious blend of imagination and stability.
Before we entered, Larry of course had to pay homage to Dali. [VIDEO LINK] http://www.youtube.com/embed/VC1lOehY0jw
No cameras are allowed in the gallery, but this photo was taken just outside the 3rd floor gallery. It is the ceiling called 'The Enigma'. No triangle is exactly like the any other in the ceiling.
We took the self guided tour of the oil paintings, water colors, graphics, and sculptures spanning the career of Salvadore Dali. I would do it again tomorrow if I could. Way too much in each painting to take in for one afternoon.
To complete the afternoon, we headed to the Pier in Saint Petersburg for a frozen cocktail overlooking the spectacular bay. Lesson learned by observing the previous occupants of the balcony table, always pick up after yourself.
